Insert page numbers into any PDF — choose position, format, font, and starting number. All processing is local.
Page numbers make long documents navigable — readers can find referenced pages instantly, courts and institutions can cite specific pages, and document reviewers can communicate clearly about exact locations. Numbers are permanently embedded in the PDF and print correctly from every viewer.
Position. Bottom centre is the most common position for general documents. Bottom right is preferred for legal and formal documents where the number needs to be visible when pages are stacked. Top right is used for academic papers following certain style guides.
Starting number. Set to 1 for most documents. For documents that are part of a larger work (chapter 3 starting at page 47, for example), set the starting number accordingly. To skip numbering a cover page, set start page to 2 and starting number to 1 — the cover remains unnumbered while the body begins at 1.
Format. "Page N of M" (Page 3 of 20) provides full context and is ideal for printed documents distributed to recipients who may not have the complete file. "N" alone is cleaner and is standard for internal documents. Roman numerals (i, ii, iii) are conventionally used for front matter (contents, preface) before the main document begins at Arabic 1.
Font size. 9–11pt at the same typeface as your document body text is typically right. Numbers should be clearly readable without competing visually with body content.
For merged documents. Add page numbers as a final step after merging at rifix.xyz/merge, so numbering is continuous across the combined document rather than each source file retaining its own sequence.
Can I skip numbering the cover page?
Yes. Set "First numbered page" to page 2 and "Starting number" to 1. The cover page will have no number while the document body starts numbering from 1.
Will page numbers appear when the document is printed?
Yes. Numbers are embedded in the PDF page content and print correctly from every PDF viewer and print dialog without any special settings.
Can I add page numbers to a password-protected PDF?
Remove the password first using the Unlock PDF tool, add page numbers, then re-apply protection using the Protect PDF tool if needed.
Is my file uploaded to a server?
No. Page numbers are added entirely in your browser. Your PDF never leaves your device.

Adding page numbers makes long documents navigable and professional. Choose from common positions — bottom centre, bottom right, top right — and set the starting page number (useful for numbering from a specific page while skipping a cover page). Font size of 9–11pt at the same font as your body text is typically right. Page numbers are permanently embedded in the output PDF and print correctly from every viewer. For documents assembled from multiple sections using rifix.xyz/merge, add page numbers as a final step after merging so numbering is continuous across the combined document.
All tools on rifix.xyz process files entirely in your browser. No document content is uploaded to any server. Processing happens on your own device — your files stay completely private.
